Police cars encircled Bristlewood Orphanage, many more than had been left on guard.

Miss Armstrong was dead, that much was certain. Her throat slit with a shard of broken glass.

Will Cooper, who Jackson had also called about the murder, came walking out of the orphanage front doorway and greeted Valerie and Charlie.

"How the hell did he get in, Will?" Valerie said, frustrated.

"He knew these grounds better than anyone," Will answered. "He was able to evade the police outside, then he broke in and killed Miss Armstrong."

"Why would Harlow risk getting caught?" asked Charlie.

"Perhaps his mental condition has made him reckless," mused Valerie.

"No," Will replied. " His actions are too deliberate. I believe he meant to end up here, whether consciously or not. His past is too great a pull."

"His anger at the orphanage and Miss Armstrong too…," offered Charlie.

"At least we now know he's heavily motivated by revenge," said Valerie. "What if he's still here? Has a full search of the building and grounds been carried out?"

"The homicide detective in charge of the scene told me there was no sign of Blake Harlow. I think he's already gone," Will replied. "He won't come back here anymore."

"Yes, his work is done," said Valerie. "Psychopaths often have a deep-seated urge to extinguish pain from their past. That's why serial killers who are emasculated by their mothers as children often target women. In effect, they're murdering their mothers over and over each time they kill."

"In this case,” Will speculated, “the killer is going directly to the source. He's not killing proxies or representations of the people who have wronged him."

"He's going after the real thing," Charlie said.

Will led Valerie and Charlie into the orphanage, through some narrow corridors until they reached a dorm room.

Miss Armstrong's body lay lifeless on the floor as a police photographer took pictures for later study.

A large shard of glass stuck out of Miss Armstrong's neck, her eyes were wide-open and lifeless, and her skin was even paler in death than it had been in life. Several large gouges had been cut into her cheeks and nose. Blood had pooled around the body on the floor.

On the nearest bed, blood had been smeared over the sheets by maddened, murderous hands.

Valerie knelt down to inspect the corpse.

Miss Armstrong's hands were covered in blood, as if she'd tried to stop the wound from bleeding.

"She was taken by surprise," Valerie said. "Otherwise, she'd have defensive cuts on her hands as she tried to fend the killer off."

"What does that tell you?" Will asked.

"If I may," Charlie interjected. "Defensive reactions are measured in milliseconds. The killer must have been waiting to be able to kill so quickly without Miss Armstrong reacting. Look around here; none of these beds have been slept in. This is an unused dorm room. He was hiding in here for a reason, and he lured Miss Armstrong in deliberately, waiting to strike as soon as the door opened. Look."

Charlie pointed to blood splatters a couple of feet away by the door frame.
